Our emergence in the worlds occurs in an almost mythical way, where there are only opinions about how and what impact the process really has upon us. Our first breath, the point where oxygen flows in ones lungs for the first time, acts as our initiation into a supernatural world that no longer only ascribes but signifies denotes and connotes values and meanings to every little act. There are arguments upon the predefined genetic codings which shall interpret oneself. Others believe in ones upbringing and education as the determining factors of their capital, yet one can view the process as an ongoing self-project where the limitless equations may simply result to dissimilar answers each and every time.
In every instance, performing becomes a central tool in the interplay of gaining consciousness of who one is. What is astonishing is how engaged everyone is in such a process, where in one way or another, consciously or otherwise, the ultimate aim is promoting the ‘imagery’ one starts to feel more comfortable being pictured by.
The profound naturalness of being is transgressed towards a conception that two hands can’t handle. We are the children of our parents, the students of our teachers, the admirers of the ‘objectively’ termed spectacular, the descendants of our bloodline, the heirs of the world’s history, the friend of our friends, the producers of life and the products of it, the promoters of culture, the ones promoted by culture, we are the advertisers of things as well as what is advertised, we are consuming as well as consumed, we narrate our lives but also narrated by it.
We are the projection of our self on our own body, the reflection of something which we believe to be our skin, the manner in which the tangible is understood in ones mind. A place where there exists nothing else, where the feeling of aloneness from the others intensifies all the splendour and magnificence of ones idiosyncrasy.
Inspired by the work in picture by Theodoulos Polyviou.
Really interesting! Had some essays on body/identity/gender and stuff the last two years at uni..
ReplyDeleteinteresting..what happens when the "projections of ourselves" are continuously missleading others, does this mean: personal change aiming for adaptation or just natural self exploration..well..?
ReplyDeleteDear unknown,
ReplyDeleteThe words quoted mostly reflect the self-project in which we all embark upon, consciously or otherwise. Its the process of directing some light towards parts of our mind which are not yet explored. Specifically those which reflect the knowledge we have of our selves.
